The water of the much awaited Melamchi Drinking Water Project will reach Sundarijal today. Water was poured into the tunnel for testing on Falgun 10. The project has stated that water will reach Sundarijal from the tunnel today.
The project has constructed two water treatment plants in Sundarijal. The water will be connected to the distribution system by pouring water in these two treatment plants if water arrives from the tunnel in normal condition.
The water from the tunnel will initially be dumped in the Bagmati. The initial water is being dumped in Bagmati as water is coming from the tunnel with garbage.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is also scheduled to visit Sundarijal today for observation and monitoring. The Prime Minister is scheduled to leave for Sundarijal at 4 pm today.
The water will be connected to the distribution system once the condition of the tunnel is improved. But according to the project, it will take some time to return.
Earlier, the tunnel was filled with water on Asar 29, but the main gate (No. 17) of the audit of Ambathan in Helambu Gaonpalika-1 burst and washed away an engineer and driver of the project.
After that, a team of four experts under the grant assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the main donor of the project, re-inspected and repaired the tunnels, mouths, gates and other structures. The tunnel is then re-tested.
170 million liters of water will come to Kathmandu Valley daily from this project. If Melamchi water comes, there will be some relief in the availability of drinking water in Kathmandu Valley.
The Upatyaka currently has a daily demand of 430 million liters of water. But Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) has been distributing only 80 million liters of water daily.
