Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to three years in prison on corruption charges. He is accused of trying to influence the judge by bribing him after he resigned in 2014.
Sarkozy is the first former president to be sentenced to prison. His two lawyers are also involved in the case. The case came to the fore in 2014 when police tapped Sarkozy's phone call to the judge. The court ruled that Sarkozy and his lawyers were trying to influence the judge.
Sarkozy's lawyer said he would appeal the court's decision. Until this process is completed, Sarkozy will be free. This process may take a few years to complete.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Christine Mee told Sarkozy that she knew she was doing something wrong and that the former president and his lawyers had tarnished the image of the court.
This issue is considered very important in the history of France. If Sarkozy's appeal fails, he will be able to serve his sentence in his own home. Sarkozy became president of France in 2007 for a five-year term.
Sarkozy is also being investigated for allegedly spending more than the limit on France's 2012 election campaign and taking money from then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for the 2007 election campaign.
