Proposal to impeach Trump fails in Senate

Kathmandu.

The impeachment motion against former US President Donald Trump has failed in the US Senate.

A motion to impeach Trump on charges of inciting violence at the US Capitol has been tabled in the Senate. The proposal was put to a vote on Saturday. Trump is relieved that a two-thirds majority has not been reached in favor of the impeachment motion.

57 senators voted in favor of the impeachment and 43 senators voted against the impeachment. 67 votes were needed for two-thirds.

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the parliament building on the day of the announcement of Biden as the new president. Two people, including a security guard, were killed in the violence.

Opposition groups called for a cease-fire in protest of Trump's decision. Biden defeated Trump in the US presidential election.
