Kathmandu.
Significant imports have been made on a daily basis since the reopening of the checkpoint closed due to Chinese Lhosar. According to the concerned customs office, seven containers of goods were imported daily from the two trade ports with China as soon as the checkpoint was reopened.
Lately, readymade garments have been imported from Tatopani Customs in Sindhupalchowk and Rasuwagadhi Customs in Rasuwagadhi. The checkpoints were closed for a long time due to obstructions from Corona and the Chinese side.
Chief of the Rasuwa Customs Office, Ram Prasad Regmi, informed that seven containers of goods have been imported daily since the checkpoint closed due to Chinese Lhosar was reopened. He said that a significant amount of material for hydropower has come from Rasuwagadhi checkpoint recently.
According to him, the import has been significant in the last few days but it has not been as easy as in the past. He said that even though all the employees working at the checkpoint were vaccinated against corona, the import was not easy due to the obstruction of the Chinese side.
"We have already vaccinated more than 200 employees at the checkpoint against the first phase of corona last month. We have kept the workers working at the checkpoint separate by adopting health security. "Even after the vaccination against corona, there are still problems in imports due to the obstruction of the Chinese side," he said.
No matter how hard we try, the Chinese side's failure to win the trust has hampered imports. '
The checkpoint, which has been closed for a long time due to corona, has come into operation unilaterally since last October.
According to the customs office, chemical fertilizers have been imported from Tatopani recently. Chief of Tatopani Customs Lal Bahadur Khatri informed that seven Chinese containers enter Nepal daily after Lhosar. According to him, chemical fertilizer has been imported in five out of seven containers.
The Tatopani checkpoint, which was closed for a long time, has been re-opened on Kartik 13. Entrepreneurs have been complaining that even though the checkpoint is fully operational, a small amount of goods are entering from the hot water checkpoint due to the obstruction of the Chinese side.
Exports halted
Exports have come to a standstill despite low imports from Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani. Though exports from Rasuwagadhi checkpoint have been suspended since last year's Chinese Lhosar, it has not been re-opened so far.
According to Rasmiwagadhi Customs Chief Regmi, the Chinese side has not taken any initiative in exporting Chinese goods. "We have been taking initiative to export at different times but the export has been stopped for a year due to lack of interest from the Chinese side," he said. Although the export from Rasuwagadhi checkpoint has been stopped for a year, the export from Tatopani checkpoint has stopped after the earthquake.
