Police have arrested two persons from Birgunj on the charge of being involved in child marriage.
A 46-year-old father of Birgunj Metropolitan City-16 and his 19-year-old son have been arrested. A 19-year-old man was married to a 17-year-old girl of Laxminarayan Tol in Birgunj-16 on Magh 19.
According to the police, the Parsa District Court has extended the time limit for investigation into the child marriage case against them for 7 days.
According to Om Prakash Khanal, Deputy Superintendent of Police, District Police Office, Parsa, the police arrested the bride and groom's father on Falgun 14 and filed a case against them.
"The time limit for filing a child marriage complaint is three months. We have arrested a 17-year-old girl and initiated proceedings against them. Although child marriage is very common in the Terai-Madhesh society, there is a problem in taking action when no complaint is received. We will take action even if only the information is given. ' he said
The police have also requested to provide information to the nearest police office or District Police Office, Parsa if any incident of child marriage is reported.
The National Criminal Code 2074 states that a person who conducts marriage and marries before the age of 20 is not permitted. Such a marriage is automatically annulled.
If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison and a fine of up to 30,000 rupees.
